Carl Jularbo, Anker Recordings, Berlin 1913 Accordionist Carl Jularbo (1893 – 1966), from Jularbo in Dalarna, Sweden, was only seven years old when he played at Dovrehallen in Kristiania (later Oslo, Norway) for the first time. This marked the beginning of an artistic career that continued for over 60 years, and that had a profound influence on accordion music in all of Scandinavia. Through the course of the years Carl Jularbo made over 1500 recordings, and of these 800 were waltzes, his favourite music to play. He was a true master of his instrument and won every competition he entered until 1920, when he was prohibited from taking part any more – he was in a class of his own. In the 1950s Jularbo played to sold-out houses everywhere he went, and was worshipped like a pop star. He celebrated his 60th birthday with a concert at Kungsträdgården in Sweden with an audience of over 60 000. He made his first recordings for the record company Anker in Berlin in 1913, where he recorded over 50 melodies. Thirty of these are included in this release from Nordic Sound. They were recorded from 78 rpm records and the sound quality is unfortunately extremely poor, but even so I hope that listeners will have a fantastic experience enjoying Carl Jularbo’s extraordinary playing.
