Almost everyone nowadays uses a metal plane for any hand planing task, and wooden planes seemed to have been forgotten. However, wooden planes were what dominated the hand plane industry back before metal planes came out. Actually, almost everything back then was made out of wood. Recently I bought a wooden plane in a second-hand shop for 15 dollars, and it wasn't the only purchase I made there, I've previously bought a #4 Falcon Pope smoothing plane and a #106 Stanley block plane. The wooden plane was in decent shape and it was a lot easier to renew than a metal plane since it's wood.
