The Odakyu Railway is one of Tokyo's major commuter railroads. It serves Shinjuku Station in Tokyo and has three mainlines which go to Enoshima, Tama, and Hakone. Odakyu is also known for running the iconic Romancecar express trains, a service started in the 1950s known for revolutionizing higher speed travel (inspired by American Interurbans such as the Brill Bullet Cars and Electroliners) and eventually leading the way of the development of the Shinkansen. The trains operate to this day as Odakyu's flagship trains, still maintaining the claims of faster speeds they are known for. The company also operates the well-known Hakone Tozan Railway and Enoshima Electric Railway, both of which I visited last year. The very last day my camera worked in Japan, I chose to go film the Odakyu Line in hopes of catching some Romancecars. I found a spot by Isehara Station where the trains pass through the rice fields with a city and mountain backdrop within walking distance of the train station, so I made it a point to go there. I boarded a train at Noborito Station and was able to get a few shots out the back of it (the front car is the women-only car) before I arrived at the field. I stayed shorter than I thought I would because I left in an attempt to catch an obscure freight train back in Tokyo (that ended up not running that day) but still got some decent action. Train 1: Odakyu 5000 Series pulls up to Noborito Station, (0:15). Train 2: Another 5000 Series stops before the platform to wait for the first train do clear, (1:01). First 5000 Series clears, (1:15). Trains 3 and 4: Odakyu 4000 Series and 5000 Series depart simultaneously, (1:35). Train 2 pulls up, (2:12). Train 5: Another 4000 Series (My train) comes around the corner and pulls up to the platform, (2:42). Train 6: 5000 Series passes as I shoot out the back of the train, (4:08). Train 7: Odakyu 3000 Series passes us, (4:45). Train 8: 8000 Series coupled with a 3000 Series passes our train. The cream-colored 8000 Series trains stand out among the Odakyu fleet, and they definitely are of interest. The 8000 Series is approaching retirement, with some examples having been sold to and started service on Seibu Railway recently, (5:00). Train 9: 2000 Series passes, (5:15). Train 10: 5000 Series departs Machida Station, (5:24). Train 11: 8000 Series and 3000 Series depart Sagami-Ono Station. This shot is shaky as I was transferring between trains and running to hop on my next one, (5:43). Train 12: 8000 Series (My train) departs Isehara Station, (6:04). Train 13: 5000 Series in the special "Mokoron" livery departs Isehara Station. Lots of Japanese companies and towns will create mascot characters to promote themselves, and Odakyu's blue rabbit character Mokoron is no exception, (6:27). Train 14: 2000 Series passes through the rice fields, (6:49). Train 15: Odakyu 3000 Series passes through the fields, this time I can finally use my tripod, (7:07). Train 16: 5000 Series in the rice fields from a distance, (7:43). Train 17: 3000 Series goes through the fields, (8:29). Train 18: 2000 Series goes past, (9:06). Train 19: 2000 Series again, (9:20). Train 20: 3000 Series follows, (9:35). Train 21: 5000 Series comes down the hill and fields, a little closer, (10:04). Train 22: 8000 Series passes by heading the other way, (10:53). Train 23: 3000 Series heads the other way, meets another 3000 Series, (11:41). Train 24: 3000 Series passes right after the last one, (12:16). Train 25: Now at the crossing, a 3000 Series speeds through, (12:59). Train 26: 2000 Series heads through the crossing, (13:54). Train 27: Finally, our first Romancecar! Romancecar 60000 Series MSE flies through the crossing, (14:38). Train 28: 3000 Series flies through the crossing and gives me a horn, (15:09). Train 29: 3000 Series heads the other way, (15:40). Train 30: Romancecar 30000 Series EXEa heads through, (16:00). Train 31: Now walking back to the station, 3000 Series goes past, (16:36). Train 32: 5000 Series meets the last train at the crossing, (16:55). Train 33: 3000 Series heads up the hill towards the station as we say goodbye to the fields, (17:30). Train 34: 3000 Series coupled with an 8000 Series approaches the station, (17:52). Train 35: 8000 Series departs Isehara Station and gives me a toot on the horn, (18:25). From here I entered the station, bought my ticket to Yoyogi-Uehara Station, and got ready to head back to Tokyo. I entered the platform and saw a Rapid-Express bound there whose doors were closing. I managed to rush in just at the last second and climb aboard. I did not shoot any trains from this train as it was super packed and I was unable to get to the first car. Train 36: 2000 Series departs Yoyogi-Uehara Station as I get ready to transfer to Tokyo Metro.
