Inherited from the famous "thirty glorious years" that preceded the aftermath of industrialization pushed to its paroxysm since the two great world wars, the end of the twentieth century revealed a disenchanted and breathless world. The social, cultural, economic and political contexts on both sides of the Atlantic brought to light the fragility of a society that was being rebuilt on the basis of unfulfilled promises, growing inequalities and a dilapidated post-industrial urban environment. For the record, it is in such a landscape that new technologies will emerge and become part of our daily lives. The stage is set! Let's continue. The period between 1985 and 1995 was a major turning point in the development and expansion of a new genre of music, TECHNO. During this decade, the movement, which was marginal at the beginning, grew considerably to the point of having conquered all the continents and seduced a very large number of audiences. At that time, a real community was born against a backdrop of thunderous sound vibrations and libertarian demands. As with any emerging current, the analysis of the phenomenon is quite complex. A few enthusiasts, from the first fans to the younger generations, historians, sociologists, philosophers, psychologists, journalists, the actors themselves of this incredible epic, can each draw a portrait, sometimes even quite thorough, detailed, of the rise of a past electronic musical movement, in barely ten years, from the status of "crazy weirdness" to a "bankable" product! In short, in any case, without making here a study of customs or an educational documentary, I have chosen to illustrate, in "old school" mode, through a few short presentations, the path of a techno movement to which I joined as soon as it was established on the European continent. Like so many other young Belgians of the time, I had a front-row seat to the emergence of a counterculture that lost its way somewhat along the way.
