There are useful selection tools in Affinity Photo, notably the Selection Brush that automatically detects edges. However, it can be difficult even for such tools to find the edge when contrast is low. It can also be a problem when you want to select a gradient, with selection going from fully selected to partially or even no selection in a graduated way.
