During last November’s election, we saw criminal justice and drug policy reform win big at the polls. Oregon became the first state to decriminalize all drugs, and voters overwhelmingly passed other reforms to drug laws, even in deeply red states like South Dakota. In addition, both the Vice President- and President-elect in their first addresses to the nation promised to “root out systemic racism” in the criminal justice system. The people have spoken, and we are on the precipice of a new moment for justice reform in America. Central to determining what this new moment will look like is the question of whether or not we as a nation move past one particularly old and dangerous habit: For decades, reforms have underscored a dichotomy between non-violent and violent offenses. It has been a winning strategy—but only for certain victories and people, and not without long-term costs. During this webinar, Kassandra Frederique, Executive Director of Drug Policy Alliance, and Danielle Sered, Executive Director of Common Justice, will be grappling with these questions and charting a path forward. Locally, we operate the first alternative-to-incarceration and victim-service program in the United States that focuses on violent felonies in the adult courts. Nationally, we leverage the lessons from our direct service to transform the justice system through partnerships, advocacy, and elevating the experience and power of those most impacted. #CriminalJustice #DrugPolicy #MassIncarceration
