His undergraduate and graduate degrees are from the University of Pennsylvania. He joined the staff of the Massachusetts Institute in 1955, retiring as Institute Professor after 60 years, and taking a position as Laureate Professor at the University of Arizona. He is a member of many professional societies in the US and abroad and has received many awards and honorary degrees. He has written and lectured widely on linguistics, philosophy, intellectual history, contemporary issues, international affairs and U.S. foreign policy, and has been engaged with many activist movements in the US and abroad.
