Hiking to Stairway to Heaven (Haiku Stairs) (11 miles with 3650 ft elev gain), Oahu, Hawaii (5-30-2022), Part 1 of 2. It’s not allowed to hike the Haiku Stairs from Kaneohe but the hikers can hike from the South side (Moanalua Valley Neighborhood Park or Tripler Ridge TH). Its trail is probably rated the most difficult in Oahu due to its length, elevation changes, and rough terrains, especially after overnight rain. The stairs were built in 1940s but has dilapidated significantly over time. It’s not safe for the public to access the Stairs from Kaneohe, Oahu. In 2021, the Honolulu City Council unanimously voted to remove the Stairs due to soaring security concerns and costs. Back in March 2021, I solo hiked to the Haiku Stairs via the legal way with more complex and longer routes: Moanalua Valley TH, Moanalua Valley, up the Tripler Ridge, to the Koolau mountain ridge, traverse to the Puu Keahiakaihoe , down and up to the Haiku Stairs Radar Station, and down the Moanalua/Kamananui Valley trail in a BIG LOOP. It was a very soggy day ! It was about 12 miles with 3900 ft elev gain ! Anyhow, my close friend’s high school friend and his wife are avid hikers, and decided to hike to this infamous stairs. Last week, we had a dry run hike: hiked two trails (Waahila Ridge and Koko Head) in a day to ensure of our physical readiness. I’ve hiked most of trails in Oahu in a few months since I moved back to Hawaii in 2020. Should you have any questions about any of Oahu hiking trails, please let me know. Mahalo for watching
