Otto Bayer Award - Life Sciences - Winner 2020 “The human gut microbiome: ecology and evolution” Prof. Ruth E. Ley is Director of the Department of Microbiome Science at the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen, Germany. She studied Integrative Biology at the University of California before undertaking her Ph. D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University in Colorado with Prof. Stephen Schmidt. She stayed there to begin her Postdoc career studying Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology. After that, she joined the Washington School of Medicine at the Center of Genome Sciences. In 2020, she won the Otto Bayer Award for her research on the human gut microbiome.
