Outside Bamako, Mali, participants in a tour led by Jerry Vogel, Deputy Director of the Museum for African Art in New York, and Christraud Geary, Teele Curator of African and Oceanic Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, were welcomed into a small village. After an exchange of greetings and expressions of gratitude to Jerry for his sustained support of their school, a percussion ensemble struck up an ominous rhythm, and a lion mask entered the large circle. He was a powerful and animated figure indeed, at times heedless of his keeper, provoking fright, laughter, and wonder at the transmogrification of human/beast/spirit.
