In this talk, I explain what a hysterectomy really is, why the vocabulary can be confusing, and how the surgery affects women’s health. Too often, patients don’t even know whether their cervix, tubes, or ovaries were removed, and this matters greatly when it comes to hormone therapy. I review the different types of hysterectomy, what happens to ovarian function and blood supply, and how removal of the ovaries affects cardiovascular health, bone health, and testosterone production. I also share why hormone therapy—estradiol, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone—is just as important for women without a uterus, and why progesterone is vital even when bleeding is no longer a concern. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, or are considering one, this video will help you understand the surgery’s long-term implications and how hormone therapy can support your health, longevity, and quality of life.
