Too often, patients don’t even know whether their cervix, tubes, or ovaries were removed, and this matters greatly when it comes to hormone therapy. I review the different types of hysterectomy, what happens to ovarian function and blood supply, and how removal of the ovaries affects cardiovascular health, bone health, and testosterone production. I also share why hormone therapy—estradiol, progesterone, and sometimes testosterone—is just as important for women without a uterus, and why progesterone is vital even when bleeding is no longer a concern.
