Punjab University Library Book Club – October 2025 Session Two Literary Gems Discussed: George Orwell’s “1984” and Muhammad Haroon Usmani’s Kapoor Nama The Punjab University Library Book Club successfully organized its October 2025 session, featuring two remarkable works from English and Urdu literature. The selected books of the month were “1984” by George Orwell and “Kapoor Nama: Kuliyat-e-Nasr Kanhaiya Lal Kapoor”, compiled and edited by Dr. Muhammad Haroon Usmani. The introductory talk on George Orwell’s 1984 was delivered by Dr. Shahzeb Khan, Director Student Affairs and Associate Professor, Institute of English Studies, Punjab University. Dr. Shahzeb highlighted the novel’s powerful portrayal of totalitarian regimes, state surveillance, and manipulation of truth, emphasizing how Orwell’s dystopian vision continues to resonate in modern times. He discussed the book’s relevance to contemporary national and international systems, drawing parallels between Orwell’s depiction of “Big Brother” and the challenges faced by societies struggling to preserve freedom, truth, and individuality in the age of digital control and political propaganda. In the second part of the session, Dr. Muhammad Haroon Usmani, Chief Librarian of Punjab University Library, introduced his Urdu compilation “Kapoor Nama: Kuliyat-e-Nasr Kanhaiya Lal Kapoor.” Dr. Usmani elaborated on Kanhaiya Lal Kapoor’s distinctive style of satire and humor, noting its deep-rooted authenticity and enduring value in Urdu literature. He praised Kapoor’s sharp social commentary and his ability to critique human behavior and societal norms through wit and irony. Dr. Usmani expressed heartfelt gratitude to all participants—students, faculty members, and both in-person and online attendees—who have actively supported and enriched the Punjab University Library Book Club platform. This session marked a special moment, as it was Dr. Usmani’s final program as Chief Librarian, concluding his dedicated and impactful tenure. On this occasion, Dr. Shahzeb Khan and other members of the Book Club paid tribute to Dr. Usmani for his outstanding contributions to the Punjab University Library and his tireless efforts in promoting literary culture and intellectual discourse through the Book Club initiative. The session concluded with warm appreciation and acknowledgment of Dr. Usmani’s legacy, as participants shared their best wishes for his future endeavors.
