Day 119. 22km (79020kms 7yrs) Apart from the dogs getting excited over something at 4:00 am I slept great in Tahar and Kadija’s olive grove. When I stopped at the house to say goodbye Kadija prepared me a breakfast of sweet coffee and biscuits before we walked into town together. It’s a 3km trip and lots of women were out making the same journey. I’ve already experienced lots of acts of kindness from men and women alike but I’m especially glad when I receive such warmth from women. A touch on the arm, welcoming words, blessings.. It lets me know they’re supportive of what I’m wearing, and what I’m doing here in Tunisia. El Kef (also Al Kaf) is built on the hillside beneath a protective kasbar. In the medina I arrived to find some other folk had requested the opening of the usually closed mausoleum so I was very lucky to be able to visit inside the Sufi shrine of the town’s patron Sidi Bou Makhlouf. I wasn’t so lucky at the old synagogue; through the crack in a bolted door I glimpsed a building out of use but still in decent condition. The much older basilica on the other hand is little more than an apse with some capitals scattered about. After a huge feed of chicken and chips which was supplemented by a plate of spaghetti I didn’t order, I needed to sit a while before continuing exploring. The local cafe turned their music off when the call to prayer began, something I remember from the gulf Arab states. I was intrigued upon asking for the toilet, to be directed to a room with two urinals and a sink. When I saw a bar I couldn’t resist attempting to transport two cold beers to my camp, but alas even in a wet sock, 14kms later they were now barely cool. In a grubby ditch with trees lining both sides I waited for sundown to set up camp. A combine harvester worked a field half a kilometre away but otherwise all was quiet.
