SAIAB has an extended collection of amphibians, such as frogs. Herpetologist, Dr Chad Keates speaks about Frogs of southern Africa. Frogs are a very important component of wetlands and aquatic systems. They contribute to multiple levels of the food chain, and without them, food webs and the ecosystem would collapse. They are exceptional indicators of ecosystem health and are used as bio-indicators for water quality and are of benefit to human health as they eat insect pests which is a benefit to agriculture and help control mosquitos which benefits human health. Collectively, amphibians are of benefit to the overall ecosystem health and the SAIAB Collections Facility is providing the opportunities and facilities to conduct such research. This is a collaboration between SAIAB and the Rhodes University Wetland Ecology Laboratory.
