Throughout the majority of the 19th century, the metronome marked the subdivision of the note value of the metronome mark (MM). This leads to a totally different world of music, where century long forgotten and lost ideas and emotions suddenly come to surface. It is a misconception that this practice leads to half as fast performance as we hear today. Rarely we hear this music played to today's standard of the so-called single beat metronome practice for the simple reason a majority of those tempi are technically unreachable. Speeds above 15 notes a second, even over 20 or 25 notes a second would appear to not have been a problem for the pre-industrialised world of musicians two centuries ago.
