This was a fun research project -- it began when I noticed a huge ship in the Kinnickinnic River in Bay View, Wisconsin (Milwaukee's lower east side). Most of the areas where ships dock are inaccessible to the public, but this 1000-foot ship has spent at least the past 2 winters a stone's throw from the east end of Greenfield Avenue (down the street from the massive Allen Bradley/Rockwell clock tower). While I will share this video with the award-winning TV show, Club TNT (http://www.clubtnt.org), I decided to upload it here because it is an example of a multimedia project that required extensive research using print resources, websites, pictures, writing, and video production. I have an accompanying document which serves as a "works cited", indicating all of the sources for the content in this short 7 minute video. I also have a written script for the narration. As you can see, with some edits and revisions, the script could be easily used to create an academic paper. This video started as a video plan, but could have started as a traditional academic term-paper. The Steward J. Cort was the Great Lakes' first 1000-foot vessel and is unusual, because the pilot house and all crew accommodations are built into the bow -- this is what gives it a pugnose appearance -- hence, the nickname "Stubby". I will share this with a class as an example of how we can use authentic research skills to create a multimedia project that takes a a traditional academic essay and rewrites it as a plan to create a video. All video editing was done in Sony Vegas (NOTE: The new version of Vegas is owned by Majix). This is professional software capable of doing anything you see on TV or in the movies. In fact, some award-winning movies have been produced with this software. Channel 3, Madison & South Central & South Western Wisconsin's largest TV station, uses Vegas for its editing needs.
