I believe there are 3 types of leaderboards in video games and today we will explore those types and look at their use in a wide array of video games. Also, we will make jokes about soda. Thanks for watching Discord: / discord Twitter: / blurbs_jonspurg Twitch: / blurbs_ Merch: https://blurbs-merch.creator-spring.com Patreon: / blurbs386 If you're not first you're last (other John runs in room "if you're not first your last")… Competition is at the heart of everything we do, driving us forward to success or in my case failure lots and lots of failure (sigh). While the most common form of video game competition pits players head to head in fierce battle…or maybe not(very lame esports interaction), the type of video game competition I want to focus on today does things a little different, its a board of scores and times in which players can attempt to be at the very top. Leaderboards are at the heart of video game competition driving all sorts of things from speedruns to kill counts to jump rope…look at him go. And I think there are 3 distinct types of leaderboards in video games, so today we are gonna look at them…the 3 types of leaderboards in video games. (Speederboard) The speederboard is a term that I coined just right now and describes leaderboards that incentivize the player to bolt through the level as quickly as possible. Some games use speederboards as a fun little side objective, incentivizing the player to re-engage with levels from earlier on in the game. Neon-White is a game based around this mechanic and its leaderboard constantly leaves you with an itch to carve off more time, as you plot out slight improvements that could take you from 18,349th in the world to 18,138th in the world, the possibilities are endless. It is the clarity of its levels and timers that really push forward the importance placed on your speed. But many other games opt to drop it in more as a little side-helping as goading the player on with slight time differences is a great way to create an addicted fan base. Portal 2 and Astros Playroom both come to mind, as their side speed modes can get you hooked in, forcing the player to shoot for the perfect run. Because of these leaderboards and level brevity, these experiences feel like a more consumer friendly version of speedrunning, one in which competition and collaboration still take center stage. (The High Scoreboard) The High Scoreboard is one known for out the bad players…do you get it, it was a reference to. The High Scoreboard incentives the player to score a whole lot of points while also juking failure and is relegated mostly to the arcade format, as games like Donkey Kong and Galaga, have players pitt it out for the honor to write or BUT in the top 5. But today remnants of the High-score board remain, from the push to cut through enemies and hit cool tricks snatching a rad combo in Rollerdrome, to the battlefield of death and destruction that is mario hoping over a length of rope a lot of times in a row. Highscoreboards sneak their way into plenty of games, but a lot of them are mobile games and I would rather jump rope as mario for 10hours than talk about a mobile game, so next section please. (The Live Board) The live board is one that displays all scores of the players within a match and finds its way into every single multiplayer game, so much so that its almost not worth talking about (so does that mean the videos over) no, I said almost (ahh). While every game has them, some are better than others. One of my favorites is in Rocket League as every stat that has an effect on score is housed within, displaying what, if any, impact each player is having on a match, proving that goals aren’t everything. Another one that I really like is the one in Rising Storm 2 where your rank comes down to squad performance rather than personal performance, incentivizing the player to communicate and cooperate more effectively. (The End) Life is all about perfection and this reflection of high score collection is sure to bring a smile to a gamers complexion, alright Im done. Leaderboards are an integral part in the competition that drives many video games, as they display the best that each player has to offer, giving gamers space to hone their craft and create works of gameplay art. From Galaga to…wierd anime, leaderboards serve and enhance a wide variety of games, so be thankful for all the devs who set the bar high and the scores higher. (That was a really cringe way to end it) shut up.
