This is the New C390 Millennium aircraft, and it’s the heaviest aircraft Brazilian aerospace company, Embraer has made so far, and it’s set to change the game in the industry. As global tensions rise, it looks like every nation will soon want this aircraft in their fleet. Many of you know that for many decades, the medium-sized military cargo transport market has been ruled by Lockheed Martin's C-130 Super Hercules. So, how the market is now changing for this, and why is every nation now eager for the C-390? Let’s see. Let’s start by learning a bit about Embraer’s history with military jets. Embraer, a Brazilian aerospace company, builds planes for nearly every purpose, commercial, agricultural, and military. They’re global leaders in regional jets and rank just behind Airbus and Boeing in commercial aircraft production. But here’s something many don’t know: Embraer was founded in 1969 to supply military aircraft to Brazil’s Air Force. Their planes, like the EMB 110 Bandeirante and EMB 312 Tucano, ruled the skies in the ’70s and ’80s, showcasing expertise that still shines today. Building on this strong military foundation, Embraer announced plans in April 2007 to create a medium-sized military twin-jet aircraft. The goal was to replace outdated Cold War-era cargo planes with a modern design. To achieve this, they integrated advanced technologies from their Embraer 190 series. By May 2008, the Brazilian government had invested over $460 million into the project, and by April 2009, Embraer secured a $1.5 billion contract to develop two prototypes. With funding from the Brazilian Air Force, production of the C-390 began in May 2009. After years of test flights, the aircraft was officially introduced in 2019 as the C-390 Millennium.
