As sadly the coronavirus pandemic restrictions mean the Music Committee cannot hold this recital by the Halcyon Quartet for our Members in the Clubhouse as originally planned, the quartet has recorded the concert so Members can watch it here instead at 6pm on 1st October 2020. Members who view this concert are kindly asked to consider making a donation to the Athenaeum to help cover the fee paid to the artists, which of course we would normally recover in the charge for attending the event in person. Members can do this by contacting Christina in the office with a request to add an amount to their account or by sending in a cheque made out to the Athenaeum. Any donations are gratefully received. The quartet will perform: String Quartet in A Major Op.18 No.5 by Ludwig Beethoven (1770-1827) Allegro Menuetto Andante Cantabile Allegro String Quartet in G Major Op.76 No.1 by Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Allegro con spirito Andante sostenuto Menuet - Presto Finale - Allegro ma non troppo Members were sent in an email from Christina on 30th September at 4.11pm a programme compiled by the quartet with further information including notes on the music they will perform. The titles of the works and movements will also appear onscreen. You may need to raise the volume on your device to hear the quartet's spoken introduction at the start. The concert, which was filmed at the Musicians’ Chapel in Holy Sepulchre, London, will last about an hour. The Halcyon Quartet are:- Millie Ashton - Violin 1 Leidy Sinclair - Violin 2 Nathalie Green-Buckley - Viola HeeYeon Cho - Cello Described as “future stars of British Chamber Music” (by Eaton Square Concerts), the Halcyon Quartet formed in 2012 at the Royal Academy of Music and studied with Jon Thorne, Martin Outram, and the Doric Quartet. Previous accolades include the 2017 St.Peter’s Prize, Sir Arthur Bliss and Harold Craxton Prizes, and the two accelerated quartet schemes offered by the RAM (Davey Posnanski and Frost A.S.S.E.T); they are currently the 2019/20 Friends of the Musicians’ Chapel Ensemble-In-Residence (Holy Sepulchre London) where they have a lunchtime recital series and were finalists in the 2020 Royal Overseas League Chamber Music Competition. Recent highlights include the quartet performing at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre with pianist Bruce Levingston as part of TRIO ConcertDance – a collaboration with principals of the Royal Ballet, West Cork Chamber Music Festival, Thames Concerts, Bermuda Festival of Performing Arts, and Eaton Square Concerts. The Halcyons also enjoy sharing their passion with younger ensembles, and have been Teaching-Quartet-In-Residence at Dartington International Music Festival, and Quartet-In-Residence with the Broadstone Music Series. Engagements for 2020/2021 include recitals for St. Ives Festival, Yatton Music Society, COAST Arts Festival, and St. Leonard’s, Bengeo Summer Festival. The Halcyons will also be providing monthly online concerts through their own website. Anyone interested in keeping in touch with their events and even having a say in their repertoire choices are invited to subscribe to their newsletter on their contact page at their website at www.halcyon-quartet.com .
