EB 5 - A visit to Capilla Peak Observatory with snowmobiles and dogs

Facilities Manager Elliott Bailey and C.V. take snowmobiles to Capilla Peak on January 31, 1989. They use the bulldozer to plow the snow off the road to clear access to the observatory. Starting with overnight camping trips in 1947 and continuing with picnics in 1950-51, the UNM Astronomy Department faculty, staff and students gradually built a high altitude observatory on Capilla Peak at 9,200 ft. in the Manzano Mountains. This observatory was in continuous use for experiments in cosmic rays, Zodiacal light, airglow, pulsars, binary star systems, Gegenschein (counterglow) and extragalactic imaging.
