The Battle of Myriokephalon, between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, is famous because it was the last attempt by the Byzantines to recover the interior of Anatolia from the Seljuks. The Seljuks were led by sultan Kilij Arslan II, while in Constantinople, emperor was Manuel I Komnenos. The Byzantines wanted to besiege Iconium, the capital of the Seljuk Turks. The battle took place in Phrygia near Lake Beyşehir in present southwestern Turkey, in September 1176. The Byzantine Army was ambushed and lost a quarter of its soldiers, as well as the siege equipment.
