Lyrics ©JenniferMcCoy2026 This is a true story. Many years ago, two teenagers—a brother and a sister—lived through a nightmare. I won’t mention their names, but this song tells a small part of their story. Their parents divorced. Their Dad moved several states away, and their mother began dating again. Soon after, her new boyfriend moved in. They didn’t just lose their home; they lost their sense of safety. They came home from school, one ordinary Monday, to find their mother gone, chasing a new life with a man they didn't really even know. The only part of this song that isn’t true is the part about the letter. There was no letter left behind. They never knew where their mother went, or why…Until three months later. Three months of silence. Three months of two kids, barely in their teens, fending for themselves in an empty house, clinging to the Bible and the hope that they weren't forgotten. When their mother finally returned, it wasn't a "happily ever after." She moved them to a strange city, married that man. He treated them like tenants, instead of children—They were charged rent for their own bedrooms. They worked, and went to school. The climax of the song—the moment by the fence—is where the darkness tried to win. But, the God of the Bible is not a passive observer. When that man led them out to that yard with evil in his heart, he didn't realize who was standing behind those children. I wrote this song because we serve a Savior who is: The Father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5) The Shield in the storm The One who hears the whispered prayers in a quiet kitchen. Jesus doesn't promise us a life without "trenches," but He does promise that we will never walk into them alone. To anyone feeling orphaned, displaced, or like you’re paying a price just to exist: You are seen. You are fiercely protected. You have a Brother in Christ who will move heaven and earth to keep you. That man dug a grave, but he couldn't touch their souls. God’s light is simply brighter than any darkness.
