This stunning vintage captures the scenery, waters, architecture of Algeria and the excitement of a sports car race in the late 1950’s. The Mediterranean Rally was formed by Les Amis du Sahara et de l’Eurafrique in assistance with various African Automotive Clubs under the post-war control of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile. It is a 1,400-kilometer marathon. After 44 days of racing, the driving duo Rainer Guenzler and Karl Kling in a Mercedes 190 D would take the win. Rainer is a German sportscar driver, writer and director who photographs (:18) the race alongside his cohort, Karl Kling. The pair repeated this incredible success in 1960 in a 220 SE at the Algiers-Central African Rally. It opens with a scenic tour of Algeria including the coastline of Algiers and its shipping port. It swings into the race, covering diverse cultures and landscapes including the Sahara Desert, Atlas Mountains, Belgian Congo, through the city of Bangui and the British Rhodesia. The film highlights Kling and Rainer’s struggle for the win as they navigate using compasses, unexpected weather, rough corrugated roads, and rivers without bridges. Rainer captures footage of locals, interactions with competitors and a dinner with a Sheik. The final section shows the close of the race as the celebrate the victory with a new record speed of 50.1 miles per hour. British narration accompanies the film. 00:00 This is an Olympia Film Production (:21).
