The Spectranetics Laser Sheath (SLS II) is intended for use with other lead extraction tools in patients who are suitable candidates for removal of implanted pacemaker and defibrillator leads. An excimer laser enables the removal of leads with low risk of damage to the surrounding heart and veins. The laser emits pulses of energy from the ultraviolet spectrum of light, specifically at 308nm wavelength. This is similar to the laser used in eye surgery. The penetration depth is less than 50 microns, or about the equivalent of the diameter of a human hair. As a result, the laser energy is absorbed by the binding tissue directly in front of the laser sheath tip, causing it to vaporize into tiny particles easily absorbed by the blood stream. This process results in controlled removal of leads. www.lifesystems.com.au At Life Systems Medical we are committed to partnering with leading global medical device makers and Australian physicians, to bring life changing solutions for patients.
