This week's music features two modern "evening services" the first of which is the Anglican evening canticles (the second is a Jewish Sabbath Evening service which will post later in the week). Philip Moore is an English organist and composer and served for many years at York Minster after the retirement of Francis Jackson. This setting is an "alternatim" which means in this case that only every other verse is sung by the choir; the others are sung by a cantor or soloist or solo group. (Other forms of "alternatim" may have the odd verses spoken or chanted by the celebrant). The Magnificat is in B-flat Major and the Nunc dimittis in b-flat minor; they both share a formula where the solo verses are accompanied by one set of organ stops (a single diapason here) and the choral verses have a more rich harmony including the pedals. I find this a very interesting setting and even if it did not initially satisfy me aesthetically I have come to enjoy it.
