Surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome should be your last and final option to alleviate your symptoms. All healthcare professionals agree that surgery should be used only when ALL other treatments have failed. The reason for considering surgery a last option is that carpal tunnel release surgery is NOT the "cure" that most people think it is. In fact, the success rate is less than 50% due to the following problems: 1) the need for a second (additional) surgery 2) pain and discomfort afterwards 3) return of symptoms 4) permanent loss of strength 5) no (or minimal) mitigation of symptoms 6) various post-surgical complications (like infection) 7) surgical complications (like reaction to anesthesia) 8) accidental (partial or complete) severing of the median nerve 9) severe scar tissue formation (this can lead to limited strength or mobility) 10) death (which is always a risk with any surgery that uses general anesthesia) 11) overall patient dissatisfaction and regret In addition, there are two Hidden Dangers that are not usually covered by doctors or even the scientific community, but can be quite severe and just as important when considering the surgical option for your hand pain. These dangers are present even if your surgery was initially "successful". The first Hidden Danger is that it might be several months, or maybe a year to recover from the surgery. This prolonged recovery assumes you don't re-injure your wrist during the healing process, which stretches out the time even farther. Everybody knows that human tissues don't react well to being cut. The major reaction is pain, but also inflammation and other physiological process play into how well you recover, and with what level of strength. The second Hidden Danger is far more insidious. You may have had carpal tunnel release surgery but maybe you didn't have carpal tunnel syndrome to begin with! It's hard to believe, but it's estimated that more than half of all carpal tunnel release surgeries are performed on patients without carpal tunnel syndrome. Conditions like wrist tendonitis, repetitive strain injury, and arthritis all produce similar symptoms, and a doctor who is quick to recommend surgery may be sending you headlong into unnecessary trouble. If you already have this painful condition you should attack the root cause of the problem: tendon inflammation due to adhesions. Carpal tunnel massage: To permanently alleviate such inflammation, merely removing pressure on the median nerve (like surgery attempts) is not enough. And it's the main reason carpal tunnel surgery fails so often. Only deep tissue carpal tunnel massage can alleviate the inflammation permanently because it drains fluid while also breaking the adhesions that cause the inflammation. It's nearly 100% effective, but you need such massage expertly performed by a trained therapist daily and for 2-4 weeks. Or you can use the Carpal Rx which is calibrated to perform this identical deep tissue carpal tunnel massage therapy on your wrist and forearm automatically, at home and every day for 2-4 weeks. It's called Carpal Rx Therapy, and it's designed so you don't have to visit a therapist repeatedly for this treatment.
