T.J. Anderson wrote a fantastic piece for bass trombone called "Minstrel Man" that depicts the vaudeville life and struggle of an African American Minstrel performer, combining the juxtaposition of outward joy and inward sorrow often felt by the performers in this industry throughout the 19th and 20th-centuries. I met with Dr. Anderson, and after an extensive interview about his life, his compositions, and his teaching philosophy, I grew to appreciate and respect him so deeply. I work in southern rural Alabama and have tried to use this work as a vehicle into the history of minstrelsy, particularly as it relates to racism and segregation throughout our music history in this country. On a personal note, I recorded this on day 1259 of my 2000 days of continuous practice and used an AEA R84 mic. Though performances are never perfect, I'm happy with the progress and I am honored to share this work with others. Please visit http://www.tjandersonmusic.com/ to learn more about T.J. Andersons significant contributions to music, and please visit www.jasonsulliman.com for more information about resources that I offer for musicians. Thank you!
