We're coming into clipping season here in the UK and social media is about to be inundated with posts about horses who aren't feeling good about the clipping process - here's what you can do to help! It may feel as though clipping problems are normal because we hear about it so frequently but this really doesn't need to be the case! Generally speaking, getting a hair cut doesn't hurt and shouldn't be causing a flight or fight response (if there's sore skin you're trying to get to, for example, it may be a bit unpleasant but we can still work with our horses to keep them under threshold). The good news is that there are just a few simple steps to give your horse a really positive introduction to the clippers. If they've already had a frightening experience, it will take a bit longer but it's really worth the effort both for your safety and their emotional wellbeing.
