Previously, I made a video covering the original Namco Museum on PSP in 2005 (   • Namco Museum (PSP, JP) - Longplay  ), which had immaculate emulation quality unmatched by previous Namco Museums, a new interface for the arcade titles, and a whole bunch of new content to play around with. When it came time to release it in the US, however, Namco must've realized they were getting stagnant with how restrictive they were with what games they were willing to include on their compilations (supposedly, the poor reception of Volumes 4 and 5 from the PS1 were what led to the boring game lists of the Mass Media collections), and that it was finally time to branch out a little further. So, they said, "Fuck it, let's just add a shitton more games." And that's how we got the magnificent Battle Collection, with 10 all new games. Namco really went all in with this one, and I couldn't be happier with the end result. Most of the new additions were last seen in the PS1 saga, and this even marked the first addition of Dig Dug II to a Namco Museum. Interestingly, the arcade titles were actually split off to two separate development teams: the games from 1979-1982 were evidently handled by Gotch Technology, while the titles from 1983-1986 were done by someone else (possibly TOSE). The latter bunch of titles aren't quite as accurate to the arcade originals as the former bunch, but they're still great ports of the games overall. And of course, all the fancy features like level selects, fully customizable settings, sound tests, the new interface, Maniac Options, and Score Attack are included as well (though, for some reason, The Tower of Druaga and Grobda lack two-player modes). They even went so far as to add King & Balloon, Bosconian, and Xevious to the Game Sharing mode. Interestingly, they actually made a few additional changes beyond just adding more games. Aside from translation, a few localization changes were made (particularly with "Manual Load", "Manual Save" and "Auto Save" becoming "Load", "Save", and "Autosave" in all settings menus), along with the ability to set all settings to default. Arcade games do take longer to load than on the JP version (though it seems like Arrangement titles actually take less time to load), and for some reason, Ms. Pac-Man behaves as if it had Pac-Man's "jumper" revision applied to it in all modes except Score Attack mode. A couple of minor alterations were also made to the Arrangement games, including one very interesting one for Dig Dug Arrangement that I plan to show off in a video sometime soon. It's mostly a bunch of minor stuff, but it is super fascinating to people like me who take notice of all these small details. All of this leads to Battle Collection easily being one of the best installments in the entire Namco Museum series. Having 17 of Namco's (and GCC's) finest games to bring along with you, plus 4 brand-new Arrangement titles, along with a slew of customizability, a great interface, and amazing emulation quality all around (not to mention the Game Sharing mode and wireless multiplayer capabilities, though I don't imagine many people got to make use of those), wrapped up in one teeny-tiny UMD, makes this easily worth the investment to anybody looking for a way to take these games on the go. This collection has given me countless hours of entertainment as a kid through car rides, various outings, waiting for appointments, and just whipping out the 'ol PSP whenever I had free time. And although I don't play on it as much these days, every time I do, I'm reminded of how great it is. If you have a PSP, do yourself a favor and get this.
