I have become increasingly frustrated with the debate around trans people in sports, usually focusing on trans women participating in women's sports. Both sides of this debate have focused on the concept of "fairness", which I think is ridiculous because sports have never been fair and never will be. I explain how genetics and body type, factors people cannot change, are a major factor in people's performance in sports, and the other big factor is wealth, privilege, and social class, including both your own family's, and that of the broader community you live in. Community also affects which sports are even available to you. Disabled people, or people born in communities where a particular sport is not played, often cannot play certain sports at all. The debate around trans people in sports has moved into the political sphere, which frustrates me. I'm a small government person and I don't think it's the government's place to resolve this issue. I want people debating this issue to go off and resolve it in private (or not) without it affecting other aspects of the political system. In the end, I don't really want to participate in this debate, but because the arguments about "fairness" are so ridiculous, I do want people to stop making them and instead find a new basis for arguments. I think a better argument to be made is one based on inclusion and the need for all people to be on a team and experience inclusion in a social group. I think this is the main benefit of sports especially for kids. I would want people, whether they are arguing a "pro" or "anti" stance for a particular type of inclusion, to make an argument based on some scenario where all people would have somewhere they could participate in sports and get to experience this inclusion. This, and not "winning" or "fairness", seems more important to me. And please, stop pretending that sports have ever been or will ever be fair.
