The REAL Reason Cinemas in Singapore are Dying

Business Enquiries: https://www.business.thebluecats.com.sg/ The Blue Cats' Instagram:   / singaporethebluecats   -------- Singapore’s cinema industry has shrunk sharply, with several long-running operators exiting the market in recent years. Cathay Cineplexes ceased operations and entered voluntary liquidation on 1 September 2025, ending an 86-year history that began in 1939 with Singapore’s first air-conditioned cinema. Its outlets had been closing progressively, from the original Handy Road branch in 2022 to other locations such as Cineleisure Orchard, Parkway Parade, AMK Hub, West Mall and Jem between 2023 and 2025, before its final four outlets also shut. Other operators also disappeared, with The Projector announcing its closure on 19 August 2025, Filmgarde shutting its last outlet at Kallang Leisure Park in March 2025, and Eng Wah leaving the industry in October 2024. The decline is not limited to Singapore. Globally, cinema ticket sales fell 8.8% in 2024 compared to the previous year, with about 4.8 billion tickets sold worldwide, roughly 500 million fewer than in 2023. Overall cinema attendance was only about 68% of 2019 pre-pandemic levels. Some major markets were hit especially hard, with China’s attendance falling 22% in a year, while the US and Canada dropped about 7% and India about 6%. In the UK, Cineworld went through bankruptcy, was delisted from the London Stock Exchange and shut about seven cinemas in 2024 as part of restructuring. Singapore’s own numbers show a steep long-term fall in cinema-going. IMDA data indicated that Singapore recorded about 8.4 million cinema admissions in 2024, down 16% from 10 million in 2023. At its peak around 2013, the country had more than 22 million admissions a year, which means attendance has more than halved in roughly a decade. This happened even as the number of screens increased from about 220 to over 260 during the same period, showing that having more cinemas did not translate into more viewers. A major reason for the shift is the rise of streaming. Polling in the United States found that about three-quarters of adults had watched a newly released movie on a streaming platform in the past year, compared with only about two-thirds who had watched one in a cinema. Only 16% said they went to the cinema at least once a month, while nearly 30% said they streamed new movies that often. Among adults under 30, almost half streamed new releases monthly, compared with about two in ten who watched them in cinemas that often. Surveys found convenience, lower cost and avoiding crowds were the main reasons, while streaming’s share of total US TV viewership reached 44.8% in May 2025, surpassing broadcast and cable combined for the first time. At the same time, theatrical release windows have shortened from around 90 days in the past to roughly 40 days, making it easier for audiences to wait and watch at home.
