Throughout history, inventors have driven some of humanity's greatest advancements. In the U.S., the Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) supports these innovators by granting patents and registering trademarks. The USPTO began on July 31, 1790, with the first patent issued to Samuel Hopkins for a potash-making process. Before 1836, nearly 10,000 patents were unnumbered and recorded only by name and date. A devastating fire in 1836 destroyed most of these records, prompting inventors to recreate documents under oath. The restored patents received identifiers ending in "X." On July 13, 1836, U.S. patent no. 1 was granted to John Ruggles for a steam locomotive traction wheel. The U.S. Constitution, Article I, Section 8, emphasizes intellectual property by empowering the government to secure exclusive rights for authors and inventors, promoting scientific and artistic progress. Since 1925, the Department of Commerce has overseen patents. A 1975 amendment renamed the office to the Patent and Trademark Office.
