(4 May 2014) Marijuana smokers in the Uruguayan and Mexican capitals celebrated the 15th annual Global Cannabis March on Saturday, an event advocating for marijuana reforms. Activists gathered for an outdoor festival in Montevideo, a day after Uruguay unveiled plans to legalise the production and sale of the drug. The plan calls for the dissemination of clones of government-approved marijuana plants, so that police can test marijuana possessed by licensed users and ensure that it's bona fide. Uruguay's marijuana rules, which President Jose Mujica plans to sign on Monday, will take effect on Tuesday. In Mexico City, hundreds of people participated in a march calling for the government to decriminalise the drug's use and to allow people to grow their own marijuana. Since 2009, Mexico has allowed the possession of no more than five grams of the drug, about four joints, for personal use, but it still requires arrests of people caught buying or selling pot in any amount. Dozens of other cities worldwide, from New York to Toronto to Jakarta, held pro-marijuana gatherings on Saturday.
