Reading from the Book of Exodus (12:1-8, 11-14): In those days, the Lord said to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt: "This month shall be for you the first month; it shall be for you the first month of the year. Say to the entire assembly of Israel: On the tenth of this month each man shall provide an animal for his family, one per household. If the household is too small to eat it, let it be shared with his neighbor's household, until the number of persons is complete; and each man shall eat his share until it is finished. It shall be an animal without defect, a male, a year old, a lamb or a goat. You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the month, and the entire assembly of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. You shall take its blood and sprinkle it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the house where you ate it. That night you shall eat the flesh, roasted with fire, and you shall eat unleavened bread and bitter herbs. And you shall eat it thus: with your waist girded, sandals on your feet, and a staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste, for it is the Passover, the Passover of the Lord. This night I will pass through all the land of Egypt, striking down all its firstborn, both man and beast, and I will execute judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. The blood shall be your sign on the houses where you are; when I see the blood, I will pass over; the destructive plague shall not touch you when I strike Egypt. This day shall be a day of remembrance for you; in it you shall keep a feast to the Lord, a perpetual ordinance for all generations. Word of God Psalm Ps 115:12-13, 15-16bc, 17-18 R/. The cup of blessing is communion with the blood of Christ How shall I repay the Lord for all the good he has done for me? I will lift up the cup of salvation, calling on his name. R/ The death of those who are faithful to him costs the Lord dearly. Lord, I am your servant, the son of your handmaid; you have broken my chains. R/ I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving, calling on your name, Lord. I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all the people. R/ Second Reading A reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians (11:23-26): For I have received from the Lord what I also handed on to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and after giving thanks, broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me." He did the same with the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." Therefore, every time you eat this bread and drink from the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. Word of God Gospel A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (13:1-15) Before the Feast of Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. They were having supper, and the devil had already put it into the mind of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him. Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands and that he had come from God and was returning to God, got up from supper, took off his outer garments, and tied a towel around himself. Then he poured water into the basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and wiped them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, and Peter said to him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" Jesus replied, "You don't understand what I'm doing now, but you will understand later." Peter said to him, "You will never wash my feet." Jesus answered, "If I don't wash you, you have no part in me." Simon Peter said to him, "Lord, not only my feet but also my hands and my head." Jesus said to him, "No one who has bathed needs to wash except his feet, but he is clean all over. You too are clean, though not all of you." For he knew who was going to betray him, and that's why he said, "Not all of you are clean." When he had finished washing their feet, he took his garments and put them on again and said to them, "Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me "Teacher" and "Lord," and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, the Teacher and the Lord, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done for you." The Word of the Lord
