Forged in 1464 for Sultan Mehmed II, the Dardanelles Gun—also known as the Great Turkish Bombard—is one of the most extraordinary cannons ever built. Cast in two massive bronze sections that screw together, it could fire a 670-pound stone ball over a mile across the Dardanelles Strait. Decorated with intricate floral designs, this colossal weapon was both a tool of war and a symbol of imperial power. Incredibly, it was still in use more than 350 years after it was cast, firing at British ships in 1807. Later, in 1868, Sultan Abdul Aziz gifted it to Queen Victoria, and today it’s preserved at Fort Nelson as part of the Royal Armouries collection. Join us as we explore the history, engineering, and legacy of this 18,000-pound masterpiece of artillery that once shook the seas.
