Alright gang - this is about as unequivocal as it gets. If you have a female Golden Retriever, an ovary sparing spay is by far the best sterilization choice. Goldens as a breed have a predilection for certain cancers that are deadly - they are difficult to detect until they are already advanced (like hemangiosarcoma), and even when detected, the treatment options aren’t great. 🐾 Removing the ovaries in a female Golden significantly increases her risk for developing these deadly cancers. Significantly. While there are some risks (which we discuss here), they are wildly outweighed by the protection your girl will get by preserving her hormones through an OSS. 🐾 A reminder that leaving your girl intact without any surgical sterilization is not a good option. Pyometra occurs in 1 in 4 intact females and can be a life-threatening condition. It’s far better to get an OSS and completely eliminate the risk. 🐾 As always, put your questions in the comments. And if you’re still hesitating in making this choice, I’d love to know what piece of information you still need, as I’m hoping this series has helped make the best choice abundantly clear. 🐾 Last, if you’re in central or northern California, Dr. Christensen is available for both OSS and vasectomies (for males). @kokopellidvm is in Sacramento & a drive after one of these procedures would be perfectly fine (I asked him). Otherwise, I’ll post links again for resources on where to find a vet. His website: https://kokopellivet.net
