Starting Our Permaculture Food Forest Orchard | Swales, Berms, and Fall Tree Planting Off Grid

After Chelsea scored 10 trees at 30% off at the local gardening center, she went down the rabbit hole of Fall planting, which moved forward our planting plans by two seasons. Time to use the excavator to dig some swales, a water collection pond, and get those fruit trees in the ground! One reason that we make these videos is so that we have a record of what we started with, and what we've learned along the way. For example, when Chelsea went back to mulch the trees later, she realized that we didn't dig the swales along the contour lines of the land. They actually follow the downward slope of the hill around the pond. While they will still be effective in stopping the water when we get a hard rain in the spring and summer, the swales should all be level. But, that's just part of the process!
