In Dev Bhumi Himachal, even today, such disgusting incidents happen that you’ll feel sick just hearing about them. A 12-year-old boy studying in class 6 went to a shop to buy some items. There was no one at the shop, so the boy went into the house next to it, thinking someone might come and give him what he needed. Pushpa Devi, the woman who owns that shop and the house, saw him and got furious. She said the boy had “polluted her house.” Then, instead of letting him go, she locked the child inside the cowshed and demanded that she wouldn’t release him until his parents brought a goat to sacrifice — to purify her home. Somehow, the boy managed to escape and ran back to his mother. His mother later revealed that the boy, terrified and hopeless, consumed some poisonous substance, believing his poor parents could never afford to buy a goat for the so-called ritual. Pushpa Devi was initially charged only with murder, and the court granted her bail. It took two weeks for this news to reach the media. During that time, Pushpa Devi visited the boy’s house twice, pretending to apologize. This horrific incident took place in Limda village of Himachal, where out of 21 houses, 18 belong to Dalit families and 3 belong to Rajput families, who consider themselves of a higher caste. After the murder, several Rajputs from nearby villages formed a “Swaran Samaj” (Upper Caste Group) to support Pushpa Devi. They have been threatening and intimidating the victim’s family, and even stopping outsiders who try to meet or help them. Now, SC/ST (Atrocities) charges have also been filed against Pushpa Devi, and the Chief Minister himself has intervened, promising a strict investigation. Just think — Himachal is known as a major tourist destination, where people from across the country come to experience its culture and beauty. Yet, even there, such regressive, casteist mindsets still exist. And let’s be clear — this casteism is not limited to Himachal. It can still be seen in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Rajasthan — almost everywhere in India, even in 2025. #castism #himachalpradesh
