Oliewenhuis Art Museum hosted a solo exhibition by local artist, Elrie Joubert titled From Crane Flies to Cameos in the Annex Gallery from 12 July to 21 August 2016. From Crane Flies to Cameos In the exhibition From Crane Flies to Cameos Elrie focused on traces of memory and the preservation thereof: “For this exhibition I found inspiration from my personal collection linked with my grandfather's stamp collection, which I inherited.” According to Art Historian, Corneli van den Berg, ‘wonder’ and ‘curiosity’ are two words that are perfectly suited to describe Elrie Joubert’s artistic practice. In her own words, she “wonders at the strange beauty of the natural world”. Curiosity, in turn, indicates a specific attitude towards the collection and display of objects and images, an attitude that is also put on display in From Crane Flies to Cameos. Elrie Joubert distinguished herself by being the first Bloemfontein-based artist to win the highly prestigious Absa l’Atelier Competition. This art competition is described as South Africa’s most prestigious, offering young emerging artists between the ages of 21 and 35 the opportunity to receive recognition for their work and develop their talents abroad. Elrie completed her B.A. (Fine Arts) with a distinction in Painting at the University of the Free State in 2006 and went on to receive her M.A. (Fine Arts) in 2010 from the same institution. Elrie’s favourite medium is black drawing ink applied with a dipping pen and she loves making ink drawings of her collected natural specimens. She is inspired mostly by nature and how miniature natural objects can be used as an exploration of art, as well as being items of scientific interest and inspiring an obsession for collecting and cataloguing. The act of collecting as a process, and the collector's tendency to turn the unexceptional into something ‘precious’, have interested her so much that they have become the basis of her conceptual work. Elrie explains: “By playing the role of the artist, scientist, collector and archaeologist, I explore the complex nature of things we generally overlook to expose art as a possible systematic science.” From Crane Flies to Cameos was opened by Art Historian, Corneli van den Berg at 19:00 on Tuesday, 12 July 2016 in the Annex Gallery, Oliewenhuis Art Museum.
