Conflict between Japan and the US? | The MINAMI-TORISHIMA INCIDENT, WWII, & Post-War History

Competing territorial claims by Japan and the United States ultimately led to diplomatic clash of sorts in the now almost forgotten Minami-Torishima Incident. Captain A. A. Rosehill, who claimed to have discovered the island (then still commonly referred to as Marcus Island) and legally occupied it under the Guano Islands Act, pushed for Washington to act. However, while the incident ended with Japan maintaining its presence on the island, it didn’t mark the last time Minami-Torishima would play a role in Japanese-American history. Indeed, the island would be the site of a pivotal battle during the Pacific theater of WWII and, following the war, Minami-Torishima (along with the Ogasawara/Bonin Islands) would continue to influence relations between the countries.
