Sepsis 6 Care Bundle

Over 37,000 people die each year from sepsis. There is an increase of approximately 8% mortality for each hour it goes untreated and many of these deaths can be prevented by timely interventions and the delivery of the ‘Sepsis 6’ care bundle. The project was implemented by initially training a small group of specialized paramedics working in response cars. The training consisted of sepsis awareness, recognition, PGD usage and practical training, all overseen by pharmacy to help ensure good clinical governance. Close working with the operational team ensured that the new drugs were quickly and easily available on the ambulances and our colleagues within the Hub were trained to ensure they were on hand to offer clinical support to paramedics in the field. Now the vast majority of paramedics are trained to recognise and begin the treatment for patients suffering sepsis by collecting blood cultures and delivering the first dose of high-strength antibiotics before the patient has even left their own home.
