Palo Duro Canyon State Park is part of the second largest canyon in the United States of America. It resides in the Texas Panhandle near Amarillo Texas. Palo Duro is Texas’ s second largest state park just behind Big Bend State Park. At the intersection of the Llano Escatado and the Caprock Escarpment, is a dramatic change for High Southern Plains to a desert canyon. Steeped in history from the Indigenous Peoples of the Comanche, Kiowas, Apaches, and Cheyenne’s. In the 1500’s the Spanish came to what is now New Mexico. Soon the Mexican and Texans played a role in the shaping of the area.
