Protecting Lebanon’s coastline through community-led sand dune restoration: Diaries of the Ocean

Along Lebanon’s southern coast, rising sea levels and stronger storms are accelerating coastal erosion and threatening livelihoods. In Kharayeb, the women-led initiative Diaries of the Ocean is working with local communities to strengthen natural coastal defences through sand dune restoration. Supported by the UNDP-Adaptation Fund Climate Innovation Accelerator (AFCIA), the project combines wooden fencing, native vegetation and GIS-based monitoring to stabilize dunes and protect beaches, farmland and local businesses. The initiative uses nature-based solutions and community stewardship. It is enhancing coastal resilience while supporting biodiversity and eco-tourism potential.
