Jamaica is dealing with a cold front that does not fit our usual tropical reality. It is cold enough that students are showing up to school in sweaters and jackets just to get through the day. That should not be controversial. What caused the backlash is that some principals are turning students away or forcing them to remove those sweaters because they do not match the school dress code. Naturally, and rightfully, this has caused public backlash. Asking children to sit in unusually cold classrooms without basic protection is inhumane and disconnected from reality. But I want to push back a little on where the blame is being placed. This is not a failure of the Prime Minister nor is it an issue that belongs at the level of the country’s top political office. Education policy does not work that way. The Ministry of Education sets broad rules and national standards. Those are macro policies. They are meant to guide schools, not micromanage them. The day-to-day judgment calls are left to school leadership, mainly principals, who are given discretion to apply those rules in a way that fits their specific environment. When a principal chooses to rigidly enforce a dress code during abnormal weather, it is unreasonable to suggest that this is a systematic failure of the Prime Minister. that is not national policy in action. The decision was taken at the local level and well within the remit of the Principal. However , if that decision harms students, then it is the principal that must be held accountable. Blaming the wrong office might feel satisfying, but it inadvertently shields the guilty party and encourages such behaviors at the high level. If a principal abuses their discretion and puts students at risk or discomfort, then they should be fired immediately. And that's that on that. ☺️ #coldfront #jamaica
