Hello, friends. I hope you're doing great today. Today's topic is about Plaosnik, which means a flat area on the top of a hill. There are many interesting historical facts about this place, but I’ll share a few of them. First, Plaosnik is an archaeological site and a holy place in Ohrid. Sources say that these days, hundreds to thousands of Macedonian Orthodox Christians gather at Plaosnik during large religious holidays like Easter and Christmas to celebrate and take part in the liturgies. Second, the reconstructed church we see is the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon. Third, Saint Clement built this monastery. According to sources, he was not satisfied with the size of the old or earlier church, so he built a new one over it and made Saint Panteleimon its patron saint. Fourth, Saint Clement was a disciple of Saint Cyril and Saint Methodius. Fifth, he used his newly built monastery as a place for educating around 3,500 disciples in the Old Slavonic and Glagolitic alphabets to Christianize Slavs. Sixth, after his death in 916, he was buried in his own grave, which he personally dug inside the monastery, and his tomb still exists today. Lastly, the monastery was converted into a mosque when the Ottoman Turks came to power in the 15th century. I feel sad though since we couldn't get the chance to really get inside and see more of the remains, like the Baptistery, the mosaic floor of an early Christian basilica, and the other relics. When you get to visit Ohrid, don't miss the opportunity to get inside Plaosnik monastery like we did. Aside from its packed history, it has a great view overlooking Ohrid Lake.
