Gandalf the Grey and the Hobbits in particular, like to smoke. What is pipeweed? The information for this video was largely provided from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Ring and The Hobbit. Pipeweed is just tobacco and is not thought to be anything else. The hobbits of the Shire/Bree were the first to smoke the plant in pipes however the plant itself does not naturally grow in the area. It grows lusciously in the warmer climes of Gondor yet it is not native to that area either but is of Númenor. As Bree is so well connected, Dwarves and Men passing through the town and the Inn of the Prancing Pony would soon take up smoking pipeweed and take it back to their own realms. Athelas is another herb that comes from Númenor and grows sparsely in the old realm of Arnor in the north. It's healing properties are not well known but Aragorn is well versed with its use as a primitive yet potent cure, most notably using it to delay the poison of the Morgul blade which stabbed Frodo on Weathertop. The Gondorians in the south were not aware of the power of Athelas and assumed it's use was limited to it's pleasant smell. I hope that this was alright for those who enjoy these speculative videos. Constructive criticism is always welcome and I hope that this bridges the gap between education and entertainment. #LOTRlore Edited on iMovie on an iPad. I don't own all images used.
