Spike Hughes was a jazz writer and composer who worked his way up to leading a fine jazz band and writing his own material. His studio band picked a fine mixture of 'jazzers' who worked for a variety of top British dance bands. Here is his first serious composition, "A Harlem Symphony", dedicated to Duke Ellington. Rather to Hughes' surprise, this was quite a successful record, selling 6000 copies (this was late 1931 when sales of records were at their lowest level during the depression). Chick Smith, Jimmy Macaffer, Leslie Thompson - t; Lew Davis, Bill Mulraney - tb; Harry Hines - cl; Billy Amstell - as; Buddy Featherstonehaugh - ts; Billy Mason - p; Alan Ferguson - g; Spike Hughes - sb; Ronnie Gubertini - d; Claude Ivy - chimes. Recorded in London, 17 Nov 1931 Transferred from an original 78 record in my own collection
