EPIC Study into Traumatic Brain Injuries shows proper pre-hospital care

Daniel Spaite, MD, FACEP, University of Arizona Tucson, presents the results of the EPIC Statewide EMS Traumatic Brain Injury Study at the 11th annual Southwest Trauma & Acute Care Symposium on November 14, 2019, in Scottsdale, AZ. He covers the three H-bombs of brain injury in the prehospital setting, emphasizing the importance of pre=oxygenation. Additionally, patients respond well to BVM unless they have a GCS of less than nine. Treatment of hypotension and avoidance of hyperventilation are also thoroughly covered in the context of the results of this study. This study showed that through proper management of TBI by emergency responders, there was a lower rate of intubation, a higher rate of BVM ventilation, a greater reversal of hypoxia, and a lower rate of hypocapnia.
