This talk took place on Saturday, June 16, 2018, in The Great Hall at The Cooper Union as part of the Typographics Conference. This recording was made possible by a generous sponsorship from Google Fonts. In 2017, the type industry lost an important innovator and friend: Rich Roat. Along with partner Andy Cruz, Rich co-founded House Industries in 1993, the font foundry and design studio renowned for its ubiquitous typefaces, eclectic design projects, notable collaborations, and ridiculous promotional schemes. Co-author and colleague, Ken Barber, will shed light on Rich’s integral role at House Industries, as well as his contributions to the design world at large. Ken Barber is the typeface design director and chief lettering officer at font foundry and design studio, House Industries. His work is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation. Ken has also been honored by the New York Type Directors Club, Association Typographique Internationale, and Design Museum London. In addition to teaching at The Cooper Union in New York City, he regularly leads workshops on the practice of hand-lettering. Ken co-authored House Industries: The Process is the Inspiration (Watson-Guptill, 2017) with Andy Cruz and Rich Roat.
