Ecology and Evolution of Emerging Zoonotic Infections - Dr Gavin JD Smith

Emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) pose a significant public health challenge globally, with severe economic, social, and health consequences. It is estimated that the SARS outbreak alone cost the world economy over $50 billion dollars in lost economic activity. The frequency of emerging infectious disease and likelihood of spread has increased steadily over the past few decades and it is predicted that many newly emergent pathogens will be zoonotic and will emerge in Asia. Understanding the ecology and evolution of EIDs within the context of the host animal species is key to effective control. Here I will present past and ongoing studies on influenza, coronaviruses and other pathogens in Asia and globally, with a focus on cross-species transmission of these pathogens.
